E-Books at the Central Lake Library

By Becky Graham, Director, Central Lake District Library

Central Lake District Library has expanded its services with audio books, eBooks, music and video downloads.  Library cardholders can check out and download digital media anytime, anywhere by visiting the Internet and going to upnorth.lib.overdrive.com.  This new service, powered by OverDrive, is free for patrons with an active library card living in the Central Lake School District and residents in Banks Township.  Users may browse in the library's website, check out with a valid library card and download to PC, Mac, and many mobile devices.  Patrons will needs to install free software.  For audio books, music, and video: OverDrive Media Console is needed.  To read eBooks, users will need Adobe Digital Editions.  Titles can be enjoyed immediately or transferred to a variety of devices, including iPod, Sony Reader, and many others. Items are also available for Kindle.  Some audio titles can be burned to CD to listen on the go.  Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period.  There are no late fees!

The addition of OverDrive was necessary to meet the needs of our patrons.  Over the past year, the library's circulation and patron numbers have declined. We believe this is directly related to the rise in popularity of digital media.  The library is here to serve the public and the public wants to use their digital devices at the library.  Since the launch of OverDrive on March 5th the library has noticed an increase of new and existing patron visits.  We are pleased with the response so far, and look forward to serving many more patrons in the future.
